Barney McLeod is an Ojibway
Stone carver, born and raised in a small town in Northern Ontario (Matachewan).
He first learned wood carving by watching his maternal grandfather.
In later years he put this knowledge to practical use carving wood
to restore fine antiques while living in Toronto. Barney began carving soapstone using traditional tools at the Canadian National
Exhibition in Toronto, and later participated in the Earth Spirit
Festival which brought together visual and performing artists from
the Japanese, Inuit and Native cultures. Barney has done exhibits
in Texas and Florida, and continues to teach in various schools
throughout the lower mainland.
Barney has personal experience with The Bear in
nature, and stays true to his cultural roots by honoring The Bear as
the primary subject of his carvings. In this way he continues to
educate and inform people of the diminishing Bear population. For
Barney, The Bear will live forever.
