It became the internationally recognized symbol of friendship by Canadians when the government installed a large Inukshuk in Afghanistan to commemorate the lives of the first four Canadian peacekeepers to be lost there. In 2005, the Canadian government installed an Inukshuk in Normandy, France, to commemorate First Nations’ participation in the First and Second World Wars.
