A Proposal to BC Ferries for a 2002 Schedule The following is a proposed schedule which addresses the needs of the Sunshine Coast Communities, and BC Ferries by addressing the problems in the current Fall/Winter/Spring Schedule and proposing a new schedule be started in the Fall of 2002. Using this new Fall/Winter/Spring schedule as a basis, extra sailings were added for Nanaimo and Langdale to create a Proposed Schedule for Summer 2002. Inherited Tardiness The basic problem in Horseshoe Bay is that if a vessel is loading berth one or two a second vessel arriving in berth three can not unload until the other vessel is finished loading. If loading is interrupted you incur additional late minutes on the Nanaimo Vessel which has little chance to make up the time. Thus the vessel in berth three (typically Langdale) in effect inherits the tardiness of the other vessel. If the first vessel to arrive in Horseshoe Bay were to use Berth three, and the second vessel to use berth two and the third vessel to use berth one and the terminal holding lanes were arranged in a similar manner this cross loading conflict would be largely eliminated. The basic flaw in the current schedule is that the first vessel to arrive in Horseshoe Bay does not use berth three, and the second vessel to arrive does not use berth two or one. In the typical cluster of activity, Nanaimo arrives then Langdale and Bowen Island. IF the present schedule was retained and Nanaimo used berth three instead of berth one or two much of the inherited tardiness would be eliminated. The second major source of Inherited Tardiness results from the 10 minute vessel separation in the afternoon. Nanaimo can only be a mere 10 minutes late before the Langdale is impacted. The schedule that I am proposing increases the vessel separation to 30 minutes. Extra Sailings for Nanaimo
